Friends University presents Faculty Recital by Tower Wind Quintet

The Tower Wind Quintet, comprised of wind faculty, will perform on Thursday, March 26, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. One high point of the show will be the premier of a new composed piece, “Five Twilight Songs,” by adjunct professor at Friends University Randy Zellers.

“Five Twilight Songs” for Wind Quintet was created from a need to form a varied set of methodologies that could be used to summon distinct atmospheres from the ensemble, and that could be used in future compositions,” said Zellers. “Each movement became a self-contained laboratory in which to experiment with various melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, and textural concepts.”

“The piece, while dark and mysterious in character overall, contains such movements as a quasi-rustic dance, an atonal scherzo, and a brooding, melancholy scene that forms the center and focus of the work,” said Zellers.

The Quintet will collaborate with Dr. James Knight on Sextet by Francis Poulenc, and perform “Early Hungarian Dances” by Ferenc Farkas, both are standards in the quintet literature. The Tower Wind Quintent will close with a piece written for them in 2002 as an expression of faith called “A Testimony of Hymns” by Miriam Overholt.

The performance will be held in Sebits Auditorium on Friends University Campus at 2100 W. University Ave., Wichita, Kan., and is free and open to the public.
