Friends University presents an original play “The Rain Game, Or, Baal Out, He Said”

The Friends University Theatre Department will present an original play by Friends University faculty member Dr. Charles Parker. “The Rain Game, Or, Baal Out, He Said” will be performed Sept. 17-19 at 7:30 p.m. and Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. in the Cornerstone Studio Theatre in the Riney Fine Arts Center on the Friends University campus.

Twenty-first century minds looking upon the Bible may often conclude: this is a strange book. Not least of the strange is that famous ancient Hebrew prophet, Elijah. Despite the shroud of mystery surrounding him, it is clear he lived in a time of war-mongering, power-grabbing and political treachery. As his royal enemies ruthlessly use their might to put down resistance, he suddenly appears on the scene in ancient Israel, taking on the role of God’s spokesperson to stand up to corruption in high places and to call people back to what is simple and true. But more than that, as the bosses adopt supernatural, magical means to obtain and maintain the power, wealth and satisfaction of desires, Elijah’s efforts create incidents of remarkably clear strangeness and humor. Yes, the Bible can be quite funny. Elijah’s story is truly a lively blend of pointed comedy and exciting drama.
