Friends University Presents an Opera – Dido and Aeneas, An Opera in Three Acts

Friends University will perform the Opera Dido and Aeneas on January 29-30, 2016 in Sebits Auditorium.

Henry Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas is an adaptation of Virgil’s Aeneid. This work, England’s first surviving opera was first performed at an all-girls boarding-school in 1689.

Purcell, familiar with the musical and dramatic tools of his day chose to mirror the French opera-ballet tradition. The opera is rich with musical dance forms which provides strong emotional contrast. The elegantly set English text is underscored with music that poignantly brings this tale of the star-crossed pair to life.

The performance will be held in Sebits Auditorium at the Friends University Campus at 2100 W. University Ave., Wichita, Kan.. and the performance is $11 for adults and $9 for seniors and students.
