Friends University Assistant Professor of Piano Dr. Jamie Knight will perform on February 9, 2016, at 7:30 p.m. in Alumni Auditorium.
This recital is a celebration of the late piano works of Beethoven. The first work on the program is a collection of Bagatelles that happen to be the last pieces he wrote for piano. These works are short and concise but are rich with the intensity and pathos of the style of late Beethoven.
The second work on the program is the Sonata op. 106 in B-flat known as the “Hammerklavier”. In contrast to the Bagatelles, this work is one the longest piano pieces that he wrote (running at approximately 45 minutes) and is also considered his most challenging for performer and audience alike. A motivic thread of descending thirds can be heard as a unifying factor throughout the piece and the work ends with an uncompromising fugue that runs the gamut in fugal procedure. Come enjoy the greatness of some of Beethoven’s last thoughts for his favorite instrument, the piano.
The performance will be held in Alumni Auditorium at the Friends University Campus at 2100 W. University Ave., Wichita, Kansas and the performance is free and open to the public.
