The Friends University Concert Band and Percussion Ensemble will present a concert on Monday, February 8 at 7:30 PM in the Sebits Auditorium in the Riney Fine Arts Building on the Friends University campus.
The Concert Band and the Percussion Ensemble have been selected by blind audition to perform at the Kansas Music Educators Association In-Service Workshop. Each year, over 6000 people attend the convention. The Concert Band is conducted by Dr. John Taylor and the Percussion Ensemble is conducted by Dr. Von Hansen.
The concert will feature music to be performed at the KMEA Convention. Among traditional and contemporary works for wind band and percussion ensemble, the Concert Band will present the world premiere of a new work composed by Steven Snowden. This work, Long Distance: Atlanta, is for wind band, vibraphone soloist, and prerecorded electronic sounds. Dr. Hansen will be the soloist. The piece is based on electronic and vocal sounds recorded in the 1960s by persons who hacked into the phone systems of that time and recorded what they heard.
The KMEA Convention is on February 25-27 at the Century II Convention Center in downtown Wichita. The Concert Band will perform at 8:45 PM on Friday, February 26 in Century II Concert Hall. The Percussion Ensemble will perform on Saturday, February 27 at 11:20 AM in the Hyatt Hotel Riverview Ballroom. Each year, over 6000 people attend the convention. The concerts are free and open to the public.
