Friends University and the Wichita Public Schools have launched the Early College Academy, a program that allows high school students to earn two years’ worth of college credit. Targeted at traditionally underrepresented students, the program will offer a combination of courses taken at the Friends University campus and Northwest High School.
“Friends University is pleased to give back to our community through this new program,” said Dr. Amy Bragg Carey, president of Friends University. “We want to show as many Wichita-area students that college is an environment where they can engage with peers, faculty and ideas so they may increase their impact on the world.”
Each spring, eighth-grade students will be eligible to apply for the Early College Academy, and the first freshmen class is expected to begin in fall 2019 with 50 students. Academy students will be able to earn up to 54 college credit hours, which will enable most of them to start college as juniors.
