Friends University’s Kappa Phi Chapter and Professor Earn National Award

Friends University’s Kappa Phi Chapter of the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society/Sigma Delta Phi has been named an “Honor Chapter” for its outstanding activities in 2018-19, an award that was bestowed to only 16 chapters nationwide in 2019. This is the 13th time since 1996 that Friends University has received this distinction. Professor Jerry Smartt, who has served as perennial chapter adviser since Friends’ first Honor Chapter award, was instrumental in earning this year’s recognition.

The Sigma Delta Pi chapter at Friends University is actively involved on campus and in the community. Some of the projects the chapter has undertaken include a translation partnership with the University of Kansas School of Medicine, establishment of the Hispanic American Leadership Organization and Latino Leaders, hosting Wichita BizFest, and participation in the Mid-American Chapter of the American Translators Association. On campus, the chapter has hosted a Cesar Chavez Day with the campus’ Hispanic American Leadership Organization.

“Friends University’s Kappa Phi chapter of Sigma Delta Phi is truly an exemplary student organization, as evidenced by the fact that they have once again been named as an “Honors Chapter,” said Ken Stoltzfus, Friends University Academic Dean. “The students of Kappa Phi are noteworthy for their dedication to service in the community, a value that is prominent in our mission statement and our RISE values (Respect, Service, Inclusion, and Excellence).  I especially appreciate Dr. Jerry Smartt’s long history of service as faculty advisor for Kappa Phi.  Dr. Smartt’s personal commitment to academic excellence and community service has set a wonderful example for our Kappa Phi students to emulate.”

Each summer, the 625 chapters of Sigma Delta Pi across the U.S. are asked to submit an annual report detailing their numerous activities and projects from the academic year. Based on these reports, the National Executive Committee chooses approximately 10 to 15 awardees annually. Chapter recognitions are based upon the caliber of chapter projects that reflect the Sigma Delta Pi mission of honoring excellence in the study of the Spanish language, contributing to cultural understanding and upholding the goals of the society.
