Wichita, Kan.– Friends University will host a First Friday gallery reception for painters Matthew Thonen and Payton Reaves. The reception will take place in the Riney Fine Arts Gallery in Riney Fine Arts Center Oct. 4 from 5-7 p.m.
Matthew Thonen is a local artist whose exhibit is a collection of expressively styled paintings. From landscapes and houses, to characters and scenes, he brings out a unique type of humor in most every work, both from experience and imagination. “I love the feeling of a successful painting. The suspense and drama throughout leading to a refreshing and affirming conclusion… it’s like a good book,” says Thonen.
Payton Reaves is a senior at Friends University and will be exhibiting a collection of painted portriats. “I am not only fascinated by capturing a moment of someone, but how to describe the personality of an individual with paint…. I want to show others the depth of the people I share a close connection to and allow them to see their personalities through color choice, brush strokes, and abstraction,” said Reaves.
The exhibit will be on display until Oct. 26 and is sponsored in part by KMUW, Wichita’s National Public Radio member station.
