Friends University students recognized as Kansas Teachers of Promise

Friends University is pleased to announce two senior teacher education students, Madeline Watson and Jarod Howard, have been recognized as 2020-2021 Teachers of Promise by the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE). Both Watson and Howard are pursuing degrees in education with Watson focusing on a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Howard seeking a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education.

Teachers of Promise honorees are students selected by their respective Kansas college or university who are enrolled in a program that offers teacher preparation. Each student not only represents their respective school, but they also have incredible opportunities to learn from and network with excellent educators and policy leaders.

“It is such a great opportunity for our students to learn and connect with some of the finest educators in the state of Kansas,” said Dr. Moses Rumano, Friends University associate professor of education and the division chair of education. “These teachers and mentors can give our future educators the real-time professional development that experienced classroom teachers are receiving at the same time for their classrooms. These are valuable lessons our students can take with them when they begin their educational careers.”

Twice a year, colleges and universities across the state of Kansas are invited to select two teacher education student recipients for the Teachers of Promise program. Watson and Howard are among 45 teacher education students from 23 higher educational institutes to receive this honor.
