Wichita, Kan. – Friends University’s new Assistant Professor of Music Theatre & Dance, Sheldon Mba, has big plans to celebrate February’s Black History Month. He seeks to draw the community to join the Friends University Dance department by offering free classes through a Black Artist Series.
Through a series of guest lectures, masterclasses and workshops, the Wichita community will gain an understanding of how African Americans express their art and also be able to walk away with new methods and apply the newfound knowledge to their own craft.
“I created this event to expose my students and the community to the intersectionality of African Americans and the arts. I want to challenge them to appreciate the cultural differences and revel in the similarities,” said Mba.
The various events, which will take place virtually, are free and open to all ages and skill levels.
Talented Black guest artists from across the U.S. include:
- Amanda Washington | Theatre From My View and NNPN Producer in Residency at Actors Express
- Frankie Lee | Zion Dance Company Member and Instructor at Alonzo Lines Ballet
- Deon Releford | Actor, Dancer, Producer, performed on Broadway tour of Carol King
- Kennedy Salters | Actor, Singer, performed in Non-equity tour of Waitress
- Daja M. Rice | Actress, Singer, Author, Director, Producer
