Wichita, KS— A collaborative initiative between Friends University students, faculty, and the Belle Plaine community is breathing new life into the city with the Belle Plaine Revitalization Project. This pioneering campaign aims to reimagine and improve key areas of the city, including the downtown district, Watson Park, and the iconic historic water tower.
Guided by civic engagement, more than 20 Friends University students involved in the project will receive hands-on experience in research, design, project management and public speaking. They are reimagining the downtown district to improve functionality, appeal, and accessibility of key spaces in Belle Plaine, while maintaining the town’s heritage. Falcons in Business, Fine Arts, Humanities, and STEM will create an everlasting community through the project, while recording their experience with a short documentary style video.
The project offers significant value to the city, as experts estimate a market value between $80,000 and $150,000.
“The collaborative nature of this revitalization project showcases the unique cross-departmental approach we take, where students from Graphic Design, Marketing, Math, English, and more work together just as they would in professional settings,” said Steve Monsen, assistant professor of graphic arts and co-director for the Belle Plaine Revitalization project. “This is an example of how we equip students with practical skills, a deep understanding of human-centered design, and the ability to make a meaningful impact throughout their college experience.”
The final designs will be unveiled during the city’s Spring Festival, scheduled for April 12-13, 2025. For more information regarding the Belle Plaine Revitalization Project, contact Sean Cash and Steven Monsen.
