First Graduate Programs Added

First Graduate Programs Added

North Central notified President Felix on June 20, 1986 that they had approved the first graduate programs at Friends, one in Family Studies and the other in Management. Accordingly, on August 28, two Master of Science programs began.

The first Candlelight Christmas Concert took place as an effort to raise money for a 1988 European tour. It was meant to be a family event. Alumni Auditorium Restored

Alumni Auditorium Restored

 The launch of a $10 Million IMPACT campaign helped restore Alumni Auditorium to its former glory after it had been collecting dust as a storage room for fifteen years. Vivian Felix assumed a key leadership role in the restoration of the auditorium.

Casado Campus Center Dedicated

The Casado Campus Center is dedicated on April 1989 named after Cuban immigrant Luis and his wife Vera Casado. Luis had been a board member since 1955.

An innovative partnership with Sedgwick County developed the Zoo Science bachelor’s and master’s degree program at Friends.

President Felix Resigns

President Felix resigns as president to assume a presidency at Azusa Pacific University in California, putting George Robert (Bob) Dove as an interim president for a year. Dove had been serving as the Dean of the College of Continuing Education at Friends University and the Executive Vice President.

Musical Showcase

In 1993, Symphony of Spring concert was a showcase of musical theatre compositions. The Singing Quakers performed selections from notable musicals such as My Fair Lady, Hello Dolly, Beauty and the Beast and Secret Garden.

$4 Million Debt Retired

On January 14, 1944, the administration was able to retire the $4 Million debt and notified North Central Associations. The growth of enrollment, the implementation of a budget committee, the increase in innovative programs and modest tuition increases contributed to the debt relief.

70th Anniversary Celebration

In 1994, the Singing Quakers celebrated their seventieth anniversary. To celebrate, Dr. Riney invited vocal alumni to perform the opening song, “It’s a Grand Night for Singing,” at a final performance of Symphony of Spring.

Circle Drive Replaced

Circle Drive Replaced

Circle Drive was removed to create the Rose Window Plaza, a replica of the stained glass rose window in Alumni Auditorium. It took 28,175 pavers to complete the plaza.

Germany Tour

The 68 member Singing Quakers ensemble toured Germany. In addition to hosting performances in historical churches throughout the country, the students stayed in the homes of local communities, served with the International Boys and Girls Scouts camp and volunteered at a local rehabilitation center.

Endowment Drops 40%

With the stock market crash of 2008, the university’s endowment fund rapidly dropped 40 percent. But the administration was steadfast in their commitment to continue to provide scholarships to students despite the sudden economic challenges.
